The Brass Herald‘s new February, 2017 issue continues a series started in December, 2015. Titled “Ladies of Brass,” the February publication features the trombone section of the Monarch brass on its cover. The 92-page magazine also includes a five-page interview with virtuoso tubist Joanna Ross Hersey and content written by the Monarch Brass, the IWBC, the Seraph Brass, and Amy Schumaker Bliss, and Mary Galime (of the Alliance Brass). Trombonist and IWBC Past-President, Maureen Horgan, is announcing the recent release of her recording Moe’s Bit o’ Blues. Ms. Horgan is currently Professor of Music in Low Brass at Georgia College and State University in Milledgeville, Georgia. The recording includes commissions and favorite works by composers Perry Goldstein, Douglas O’Grady, Jonathan Santore, Kenyon Wilson, Robert Suderberg and Richard Zarov. The diverse compositions presented are for a number of different instrumentations: trombone and piano, brass quintet, trombone quartet; trombone, flute and electronics; and trombone and electronics. Other performers on the recording include Scott Hartmann, Julie Josephson, Don Robinson, John McElroy, Bart Jones, David Saunders, Kenyon Wilson, Lisa Bartholow, and Connie Cheesebrough. There’s nothing quite like the thrill of hearing the words “International Women’s Brass Conference” on public radio!
This month, in honor of Women’s History Month, central Ohio’s Classical 101 radio station has been publishing an excellent series. The station’s “Women of Brass” has featured the Seraph Brass, the Stiletto Brass, and Genghis Barbie so far, and has aired recordings by female brass musicians on Saturdays and Tuesdays all month. It’s great to see a prominent radio station supporting women brass musicians so overtly; classical radio shies away from innovation and mold-breaking. Shout-out to WOSU for proving that needs not be the case.
via Norway.org: The ten-piece ensemble fronted by trumpet virtuoso Tine Thing Helseth is set to embark on its first U.S. tour this spring!
tenThing, a Norwegian ten-woman brass ensemble has performed brass ensemble music to the highest standard since its founding in 2007. Helseth and three of her trumpet friends founded the group after watching a string orchestra concert, because they wanted to match that caliber of ensemble performance on brass instruments. The group plays entirely original arrangements and sometimes also uses choreography.
